Zoom is a tool most employees have experience with, so we believe that Zoom can be an easy entrance to screen recording for our lecturers / teachers.

Recording lectures with Zoom

If you have not used Zoom for teaching / meetings - first see the quick guides and videos on top of the home page for this course.

Initially, make sure you have enough free space on your computer. See image under the heading "Settings and advanced options" further down the page. A recording can be 2-3 GB in size, so make sure you have enough free space.

1a) Option 1

Create an appointment in Outlook only with yourself (shows in your calendar that you are busy) while recording. Then click on the link to the meeting.

In the Zoom program you have the option to change various settings for the recording (how the webcam is displayed in the video, etc.), so for some it may be a good idea to open a meeting using this option. See info about recording settings further down the page. Open the Zoom application on your computer and start a new meeting by clicking "New Meeting".

2. Start the recording

a) You see the Zoom window.

b) Click "Record" when you want to start recording.

We recommend that you show video from the webcam initially (so that the students see you in large format before you start), when you introduce the lecture, but you can also choose to share / start the presentation (green button -> "Share Screen") before you click "Record".

You can share everything on the screen (1). It can be good if you need to have several windows visible at the same time, but here there is also a risk that alerts from e-mails and other things appear. We therefore recommend that you only share the application window you want to display (for example, Powerpoint or a browser window - see 2 in the image).

You can share all the program windows you have open on your computer. If you do not see the application you want to share, you must first open it. In addition to sharing a screen or applications, you have a whiteboard available by default (see point 3 in the image). There you can draw. You can also annotate / draw on program windows and what you show on the screen with the button "Annotate" - see the next picture.

If you want to show a video in the lecture, we recommend checking "Optimize Screen ..." (see point 4 in the image above). Select the "Share" button when you have selected what you want to share.

Explanation of the arrows.

1) You can hide the video during the recording by clicking "Stop video".

2) If the menu bar is in the way, you can move it to the bottom by clicking here - see arrow 2.

3) This icon shows that the recording is in progress.

4) You can switch between which windows you share by clicking "New share" (for example between powerpoint and a website / YouTube etc). You do not need to finish sharing a program / window before you share anything else.

5) If you want to draw and write on what you show you can click "Annotations" (what you draw is not stored in the powerpoint or other files, just in the video recording) .

6) Under "More" you have several options, including "Pause" and "Stop Recording" (these are directly in the menu bar when you record without sharing content. If you stop recording and start again, a new video file is created for the next recording, if you pause the recording and start it again, Zoom will record the same video file for the recording.

7) You can also end the presentation and recording at the same time by clicking "End Meeting", but we would recommend clicking "Stop Share" before endring, so that the webcam video of you is displayed in large format, and you can say properly "thank you for now", before ending the recording or ending the meeting. You can end the meeting immediately, or stop recording before you end the meeting. The recording is saved anyway.

e) Saving and converting the video

After you have finished the "meeting", Zoom will convert the recording so that you can access the files:

When the conversion process is complete, the folder containing the recording files is opened (these are located by default in the Documents -> Zoom -> Folder with the date the day the recording was made).

By default, the audio / video file (MP4) will be named Zoom_0. mp4. The audio file (M4A) is named audio_only.m4a.

If the recording session ends unexpectedly or if the conversion process is interrupted, the recording files may be corrupted and not recoverable. Restarting or shutting down the computer, putting the hard disk to sleep or shutting down the laptop will interrupt the conversion process. If the conversion process does not succeed after the recording is completed, try to convert the files again by navigating to the folder where the recording files are located on the recording files. By default, the recordings are stored on your computer under Documents / Zoom / Folder with Date of Recording.

If you want the webcam visible throughout the presentation, but can not find a good solution for where the video window should be without getting in the way of what you are showing, go to Settings in in the Zoom- program. Click the icon at the top right (your profile) -> select "Settings" -> then select "Recording".

You can also access this page after entering a Zoom meeting, by clicking the arrow to the right of the Stop / Start Video icon -> Video settings - Recording.

Here you also see that you can choose not to have video visible during recording, but by default it should be on.

If you change the "Recording" settings on this page, all your future recordings will be affected by the changes. If the change is only to apply to the recording you make for the current lecture video, you must return to this page after the recording, and adjust the settings again. On this page (see highlighted above) you will also see how much storage space you have available on your hard drive.
